Anything you can think up and create is possible, and our simple to use online design tool will help you see exactly what it will look like on the finished item. You can even choose some of the finer details when you make your own personalized swimwear, such as the stitching thread color or the drawstring color, depending on the style.
Historically bathing and swimming would be done nude; this is how it was for centuries. During the 18th century each town could make their own laws with regards to what should be worn whilst swimming. In the mid-19th century the UK made it law that that men would no longer be able to swim naked. Since that time swimwear has gone from a wool suit which resembled a thermal all-in-one, to the trunks and shorts that we know today.
There are a variety of different types of men's swimwear, most of which are still quite strongly based on historical styling. Swim briefs, or 'speedos' are similar to appearance to 'briefs', a type of underwear. Dating back at least as far as the 1930s, it is most likely that the swimwear came before the underwear. Early versions were made of wool, with a canvas waist belt, and over the years these have been made from various fabrics, including nylon, spandex and poly materials.
Trunks differ in meaning dependent on locality. In the US this would be a loose-fitting, mid-thigh cut, which we would commonly refer to in the UK as swim shorts. In the UK, the phrase 'trunks' when associated with swimwear tends to refer to tighter fitting, shorter shorts that are longer and more conservative than briefs. Swim shorts would sit around the mid-thigh and have a looser fit; these would usually have a brief shaped lining inside.
Board shorts are a longer version of swim shorts that would sit around knee length - either just above or just below. These shorts were originally for board sports, including but not limited to surfing and wake boarding. These are not specifically swimwear however are often made from quick drying material and are perfectly fine if they get wet.
We have come a long way from wool and canvas swim shorts, however options are still somewhat limited. Men's swimwear tends to feature 'traditionally masculine' coloring, with very few patterns and details available. Those that do have patterns, are not always printed, they are often a transfer or just a logo emblem made from a different material and stuck on, occasionally embroidered.
